Alarm and Video Event Review

An alarm notification is more useful when authorized staff can identify the correct location and review relevant video. This guide explains the questions to settle before connecting intrusion events and camera workflows.

Describe the Review Task

Choose a real example, such as an after-hours loading-door event. Identify which camera view would explain the activity, who should review it, and what information is needed before the event is escalated. A wide overview and a view intended for identification may answer different questions.

Ask how device names, timestamps, and location labels will be aligned. Document what is recorded and how a reviewer finds the event later. Avoid assuming that every existing camera or alarm panel supports the same connection.

Define Access and Retention

Limit access to people who need it for their role. Agree how clips are retained, exported, and shared, and how permissions change when an employee or provider leaves. The organization should document its own privacy and evidence-handling responsibilities.

Review a representative event during commissioning, including an unavailable camera or interrupted connection. Record the limitations instead of treating a successful demonstration as a guarantee of every future outcome.

Connect to the Wider Plan

Return to the alarm integration reference for the relationship between cameras, doors, alarms, and response procedures. If another organization handles monitoring, include the monitoring handoff checklist in the discussion.

Select a camera that actually answers the event question

For an after-hours door contact, choose a view showing the entrance and expected direction of movement. For a loading dock, a camera inside an empty shipping office may not show a vehicle or person at the affected door. Check illumination, field of view, occlusion and recording state during the relevant hours. Confirm names and clocks align between the alarm and video systems.

Define the review and escalation threshold

Give the operator a documented choice among legitimate activity, false detection, ambiguous footage and suspicious movement. State who calls the keyholder, whether a monitoring center has authorized video access and how an event is closed. An AI detection can support a review but must not be treated as proof of an offense.

Verify the evidence workflow

Simulate an event, locate the corresponding recorded clip, export it with an accurate timestamp and verify permissions. Then interrupt an approved camera or communications path and test how the unavailable footage is reported. Retention and privacy rules remain the property’s responsibility.
